Design 'Theory of Change

The 'Theory of Change' is a very powerful and visual tool to make measurable that which is difficult to capture in numbers.

We support parties in drawing up a Theory of Change. The output is an image or diagram with text of no more than 1 clear page. The road towards it is as valuable as the end result and it requires a lot of dialogue, writing and rewriting.

Purpose

What is a Theory of Change (TOC) for and how do we approach it?

A Theory of Change is a model for describing the causal relationship between activities and impact. Developing a Theory of Change contributes to several internal and external goals:

  • A clear shared vision and goals
  • Insight into the effectiveness of activities
  • A basis for measuring impact and tools for managing for impact maximization
  • Engagement of external stakeholders
  • Transparency towards the outside world
  • A clear storyline to communicate

A Theory of Change does not have a fixed form, but it does have a hierarchy with a number of fixed components:

Approach

The road to a Theory of Change (TOC) consists of the three elements joint sessions, 1-on-1 interviews to get ideas, and individual writing.

We decide together how much time to spend on workshops and interviews. Many clients decide after completing the TOC to adapt the layout of the model to their own corporate identity or even have a professional designer transform it from an outline to something more visual.
